Events where Fly Right is performing in Summer 2009....

The Summer Dancin’

Starting at 1pm on Saturday 4 July 2009, there’ll be a dance event taking place outdoors in the Grassmarket (if weather beats us, all will take place within DanceBase!). The whole event leads up to a late afternoon traditional tea dance with live bandstand music and light refreshments of tea and cakes, all hosted by Gary and Susan of Fly Right Dance Company.  This will followed by The Summer Dancin’ Serenade – a programme of light, Latin dance music played the proper way, acoustic and authentic, offering a classy evening of unadulterated enjoyment for purist and novice alike. Sounds like a great summer Saturday.  More details here: http://www.grassmarket.net/newsandevents.asp.

East Fortune Airshow 2009

Fly Right will be making their annual appearance at the East Fortune Airshow 2009, on 25 July.  We’ll be giving free dance taster classes throughout the day, suitable for young and old alike.  This year, the dance will have a distinctly WW1 theme, complementing East Fortune’s key role during the Great War in coastal air defence. Gary and Susan will be giving their tribute to Vernon and Irene Castle, dance stars of the 1910s who were a major influence on social dance trends in the twentieth century.  The Castles favoured an informal and natural ballroom dancing style, and they popularised dances such as the Tango and Foxtrot, making them socially acceptable and accessible.  So our lessons will themed around the Castles and their legacy. More details about the airshow here:  http://www.nms.ac.uk/our_museums/museum_of_flight/airshow_09.aspx

Tea Dance 2009

This will be Fly Right’s sixth year performing at the Edinburgh Fringe.  Our Tea Dance has now been granted “legendary” status (that’s what the Pleasance’s blurb says about us, anyway!). If you don’t know the event to which we’re referring, here’s a brief explanation.  The Tea Dance is a one-hour Fringe show at the Pleasance Dome (venue 23) in the Palm Court, at 6.30pm every night from 9 August (except 17th and 24th). The format is:  brief dance demo from your hosts, followed by simple dance lesson (a bit public, but all in the spirit of the Fringe and darn good fun!). After this, around 7.15pm, cocktails and canapes are served (VERY civilised) followed by a bit of dance practice for participants.  All for the tiny sum of £6.50 (remember - free cocktails - gotta be the best value in the Fringe!!). Here’s the Fringe listing - http://www.edfringe.com/ticketing/detail.php?id=16270 and the Pleasance Theatre’s information here:  http://www.pleasance.co.uk/edinburgh/edinburgh/listings/search/Tea+Dance - there’s two-for-one offers on tickets for the first two nights.  Hope to see you there! Fringe by the Sea Tea Dance

In case you didn’t know, North Berwick has its own lovely Fringe Festival - a Festival-by-the-Sea which runs from 11th to 16th August and has something for everyone - especially wonderful music!  This year, they have an added bonus - a Spiegeltent which will host many of the Festival’s events, including our very own contribution - the inevitable Tea Dance!  It’s on 16th August, at 4pm, in the Spiegeltent on the seafront at North Berwick.  More details and tickets from http://www.fringebythesea.co.uk/events - it promises to be a very civilised affair. Forget sequence dancing - this will be an opportunity to get your glad rags on and shake a (genteel) leg with some dance demos and guidance in the form of fun instruction from Gary and Susan of Fly Right!
